Why do I lose power on my fence?
This is a common problem, so here are some tips that may help:
- Eliminate tall weeds and overhanging branches
- Keep the weeds underneath your fence trimmed, and overhanging branches off your fence. These steal the power off your fence and shunt it to ground.
- Use galvanized metal fence tensioners
- If you use a fence strainer/tensioner, make sure it’s galvanized. If your hot or ground wire runs through a rusty tensioner spring, this greatly reduces the charge an animal feels. Rusted metal is a much poorer conductor than clean metal.
- Properly ground your fence
- See our last post, “Why is good grounding so important?” for some helpful suggestions.
- Use a fence charger with low-impedance output
- A low-impedance fence charger is much better for transferring power from the charger to your fence, especially if your fence isn’t in perfect condition.
